Iraq's intercity travel ran on informal garage networks with unpredictable pricing and no trip visibility. Existing ride apps only handled short urban trips.
We owned engineering end to end as product partner: geospatial dispatch on PostGIS and Redis, event driven backend on Django and Celery, and Azure infrastructure built to expand across the region.
Measurable Objectives & Outcomes
Intelligent Driver Discovery
Built a geospatial matching engine using PostGIS spatial queries, SRID calculations, and Redis caching to identify and rank nearby available drivers quickly.
Resilient Trip Communication
Implemented a push notification architecture to deliver booking requests, confirmations, and trip updates reliably across low-connectivity highway routes.
Scalable Booking Infrastructure
Leveraged Celery and Redis asynchronous processing to handle background operations like trip events, notifications, and transaction workflows without impacting core APIs.
MVP Scalability Foundation
Architected the platform to support initial user growth of 5,000+ daily active users with optimized APIs, caching, database indexing, and scalable cloud infrastructure designed for future expansion.
Secure Cloud Foundation
Deployed the platform on Azure with scalable infrastructure, secure API communication, encrypted data storage, monitoring, and zero-downtime deployment workflows.
Expansion Ready Architecture
Designed a modular backend and mobile architecture capable of supporting additional cities, routes, users, and operational requirements as the platform scales.
Business Problem, Constraints & Goals
“Intercity transportation across Iraq was largely unorganized with passengers relying on fragmented offline transport hubs that offered inconsistent pricing, uncertain departures, limited journey visibility, and often expensive fares due to a lack of pricing transparency. Existing mobility apps were built primarily for intra-city travel and lacked the driver infrastructure, dispatch model, and operational capabilities required for reliable long-distance intercity transportation, leaving a significant gap in the market.”
- Unreliable highway connectivity
- Battery efficient realtime on both platforms
- Sub second driver matching at scale
- Cash and wallet payments reconciled
- Nearest driver matching with PostGIS radial search
- Async bookings on Celery and Redis for peak traffic
- Push trip updates that survive dead zones
- Secure scalable Azure backend with wallets included
